Skechers are my choice for this tight comparison but I had to blink a lot more than once.
Skechers are not the same thing as Clarks shoes or all-terrain shoes. Skechers are orthotics. They are shoes that fit your feet better than normal shoes because your feet are different than normal human feet.
Clarks shoes used to be pretty good, but they’ve fallen out of favor since the 1970s. Now Skechers is the only game in town, and not just for people with flat feet.
The reason they’re better than Clarks is that they put their money where their mouth is. The company does not claim to make orthotics but rather claims to make shoes that fit better than any other kind of shoe.
Because these claims are true, they can market their products without making false claims that they don’t really believe. And this honesty and clarity have helped them sell a lot of shoes and to develop a loyal customer base.
There is no doubt that Skechers make assets rather than shoes. But the claim is so clear it doesn’t need to be made explicitly: there’s no confusion about whether you’re buying a comfy machine or a shoe.
And because the claim is so clear it doesn’t need to be made at all: why would anyone want an orthotic?

Differences between Skechers and Clarks
Skechers have higher platforms
A high-sole platform shoe is a high-top sneaker with a low-profile sole. The main difference between a high-sole platform sneaker and a normal-sole sneaker is the height of the sole.
In a normal-sole sneaker, the top of the sole extends as high as the anklebone, while in a high-soled sneaker, that area is much lower.
As a result, air can flow underneath the foot more easily in high-soled shoes, giving them more spring. That means that you can run faster in them without getting sore or fatigued.
Most shoes are designed to take advantage of the difference between the main two types of the sole. Skechers, for example, exploit the high-heeled foot.
Mid-height shoes like Clarks exploit the mid-height foot; low-heeled shoes exploit the low-heeled foot.
Normal platform shoe like the Clarks is the height that makes sense for most people. It’s about 2/3 of an inch or so above your typical height.
That’s what you’d get if you were randomly assigned a normal shoe size. Skechers makes sense for tall people, which tend to be noticeably higher than Clarks.
Usually, it’s about 1/2 an inch higher. Shoes with a high sole platform look good on tall people but also look good on short people who have unusually high arches or other feet peculiarities that require a high sole platform shoe to fit them properly.
Skechers designs are more laid back
The differences between uptight design and relaxed design look small because what you notice first is the differences among different products. But even small differences accumulate over time.
Take the Clarks’ design of shoes. You might have to tighten them very before they are comfortable. If you have to tighten them too much, they can pinch your toes.
If you don’t tighten them enough, you might be caught crouching over your knees all day. So you need to tighten them up to walk normally, and more stable.
Now compare that with Skechers. The explanation for this is that shoes are made to be more orthotic, which has memory itself.
It shrinks when it gets cold because it does not want to lose the warmth stored there in the past. So it needs stretching back out before it is happy again.
Many companies have tried to copy the Skechers technology in terms of comfort, but none have been able to recreate the true sensation.
Your Skechers won’t fall out or break. You can run in these shoes, jump off a trampoline, run on a treadmill, and through water systems all day long without feeling any discomfort from them.
They present different value for your money
Dress-up shoes like Clarks are meant to make you look good. The nice thing about Clarks is that they give you a choice of how much you want to look good – it’s a matter of taste.
For most Skechers, the expectation is clear from the start: you might be going out to run or play a game. You still get a choice about whether you’ll look good though.
With Clarks, it’s different: if you wear them out in public, people will notice. They’ll wonder what you’re up to. It will be your fault if they notice, but that’s okay–you can get away with it if you want.
The important thing for sporty shoes like Skechers is safety, not style; though style comes from safety.
Their performance with water
The difference between Skechers and Clarks is this: if you wear the Skechers, you might likely not slip on the wet floor.
But wearing the Clarks is more about protecting the surface. Non-slip brands like the Skechers, claim to be more comfortable, warmer, better for your feet, and they don’t wear out as quickly.
I had a pair of Skechers shoes, and they were fine on the supermarket floor, but they didn’t hold together well on the beach.
After that, I tried a pair of my friend’s Clarks, and they worked fine on the beach, but they had not as much grip on the supermarket floor.
Why such different results even though both are mostly made of synthetic rubber soles? The answer is that both brands of shoes were made for different concepts.
Both shoes have the same feel of rubber. But Clarks uses more leather for long-lasting purposes: Skechers for grip, Clarks for flexibility.
Clarks are leather while Skechers are memory shoes
So what is the difference between leather shoes and memory foam shoes? Well, memory foam does not smell like feet. But it also does not take up moisture like leather, so it’s more comfortable in humid weather.
I know that sounds like a trivial thing to worry about, but if you spend much time out of doors, it can be important.
I used to live in England, where the summers are rainy and humid; I wore Clarks all summer long except when I was in the shower (haha). If I had Skechers on, my feet would have been dryer all summer long.
Memory foam is better than leather for some people because it is lighter and dries faster. But if you are planning to go on long hikes or bike rides in the summer, you should probably get durable Clarks instead.
The big advantage of leather shoes is that it’s durable. Leather is a kind of immortal, and it can last a long time without breaking down.
There are people who swear on Skechers for making shoes, but I don’t think they are telling the whole truth in terms of durability.
Skechers has their advantages for shoes too. But the biggest advantage isn’t the durability; it’s the way it responds to your foot.
Memory foam feels better than leather shoes because it has more surface area. When you walk, your foot rolls over the inside of the shoe, which delivers friction to your foot.
With memory foam, that friction is reduced because there are more places for your foot to rub against the shoe.
This means that memory foam shoes are cooler during exercise because you don’t have to work as hard to keep them on your feet.
Skechers also help with other kinds of motion in your foot. It absorbs shock better than Clarks, so you feel less heel pain when you do things like kicking a soccer ball or run upstairs.
Similarities between Skechers and Clarks
- They are true-to-size
- They are orthotic shoes
Both always stay true to size
If you pay attention, you will find that the old Clarks and the new Clarks fit more or less the same. The new ones just look a little better.
Similarly, the Clarks and the Skechers feel very similar on the first try. They are both shoes: worn by millions of people, making millions of dollars for their manufacturers.
They are really alike in terms of being true to custom sizes. People hardly complain when it comes to these two, so long as you take them for what they say on the box: quality shoes made to size.
The “true to size” thing is a marketing gimmick, and it doesn’t work. So why do we insist on buying things we don’t need?
Both are orthotic
There are now many different brands of shoes. But most of them are not really better than others. Some are even worse – so if you have to choose between buying a pair of shoes, don’t worry too much about which brand you buy.
There is a big difference between shoes and orthotic shoe brands. Both shoe brands are just different ways of making the same thing.
You might think that being able to choose between them is an advantage if you have problems with your feet – but it isn’t really.
These are similar orthotic shoe brands, and the differences between them are pretty small.
So, if you have problems with your feet, it’s not worth spending hundreds of dollars on orthotics when you have these affordable options.

Some love the simplicity of love the safety of running shoes. Others enjoy the comfort of a delicate pair of flats on bare feet. And some prefer a more daring pair of wedges or heels.
